Flip the Script (CSI:1490)
The traditional script around sexual assault blames victims and perpetuates a common belief that there is little women can do to protect themselves. Flip the Script aims to challenge these notions.
Flip the Script follows the Enhanced Assess Acknowledge Act (EAAA) curriculum , developed by Dr. Charlene Senn at the University of Windsor. In a randomized controlled trial, women who completed the EAAA program were 46% less likely to experience a completed sexual assault and 63% less likely to experience an attempted sexual assault.
The University of Iowa is the second university in the United States to offer this curriculum and the first to offer it for academic credit. For information on the curriculum and its research, visit sarecentre.org.
Course description
Flip the Script is a sexual assault resistance course for women, regardless of sexual orientation and inclusive of trans women, but focused on violence committed by men. The course is predicated on the understanding that it is NEVER a victim’s fault if they are sexually assaulted and reminds participants that there is no risk for sexual violence without the presence of a perpetrator.
Flip the Script comprises four core units:
- Assess: Recognize characteristics in the environment and in other people that increase the likelihood of sexual assault.
- Acknowledge: Explore personal beliefs which create emotional barriers to resistance.
- Act: Learn verbal and physical strategies that effectively deter perpetrators.
- Relationships and Sexuality: Clarify relationship preferences and desires in order to recognize and resist partners who don't respect these choices.
