Program Information and Frequently Asked Questions

As a member of the Hawkeye community, we all have a role in ensuring safety and success of all students. For this reason, all incoming graduate/professional students (including off campus or part-time students) are required to complete the online sexual misconduct prevention education course. This program is just one part of a comprehensive strategy, which you can read more about here: 2021-2024 Anti-Violence Plan.

You will find many of your questions answered below, but feel free to reach out to us at ui-ipv-prevention@uiowa.edu and we’re happy to help with any additional information. Please include your HawkID with any questions so we can be sure to get you the best information for your situation.

Program Information:

  • Completion of both portions of the program is mandatory for all new graduate/professional students taking any courses at the University of Iowa, including part-time and off-campus students. This program is separate from any sexual harassment training you may be required to take for your specific graduate/professional program, or if you also participate in university employee training.
  • Failure to complete the program by the course deadline will result in a registration hold being placed on any future course registration through the university.
  • Check your Hawkmail e-mail account (@uiowa.edu) frequently for instructions and updates. All program notification will be directed to your Hawkmail account, so it is your responsibility to be checking, whether or not you use a separate account as your primary address.
  • If you are no longer a student at the University of Iowa, please let us know so that we may remove you from the program. If you withdraw from the University after the 2nd week of class, you are still responsible for completing the program.

If you have any questions about the program, we are happy to assist. Please e-mail: ui-ipv-prevention@uiowa.edu and include your HawkID with any questions so we can be sure to get you the best information about your particular situation.

Accommodations:

We care about your safety and well-being. If you have experienced sexual harm or violence in an intimate relationship, engaging with this content may be difficult. If you do not feel comfortable completing the program, alternate accommodations are available:

You may speak virtually via an online platform or via phone with a confidential trauma-informed advocate from the Rape Victim Advocacy Program (RVAP) to ensure that you receive information and resources in a supportive environment. You are not required to talk about your personal experience. The advocate will work with you to address ongoing safety and overall well-being issues, as well as discuss prevention measures we share widely with all students. Again, you will not be required to talk about your personal circumstance.

To schedule: To request this alternative option, please send an email to rvap@uiowa.edu or call 319.335.6001 and say that you are requesting a “University of Iowa Online Sexual Violence Prevention Program accommodation.” You will receive a response within 2 business days. Appointments can happen virtually or via phone, you are not required to meet in person. RVAP also operates a 24-Hour Support line at 319.335.6000.

For online program-specific questions, please email ui-ipv-prevention@uiowa.edu. RVAP is unable to assist with questions about the online program.

If you are a student with a disability

The University of Iowa prohibits discrimination in educational programs on the basis of disability. If you require an accommodation in order to participate in this educational program, please e-mail ui-ipv-prevention@uiowa.edu.

It is not uncommon that an individual may hold multiple roles with the university. For example, someone whose primary role is as an employee at the university may also enroll in a class, or someone whose primary role is as a student may also be employed in some capacity though the university. This online program, titled "Sexual Violence Prevention for Graduate Students" is required for all individuals who are beginning any graduate or professional coursework at the University of Iowa, regardless of any additional roles you may have. It is possible you may be required to take separate trainings specific to your other roles at the university, but those trainings would cover content that is different from what is addressed in this program.

If you completed your undergraduate program at the University of Iowa, you would have completed a different program, which is specific to undergraduate students. This program is for anyone taking any post-graduate courses.

If you have experienced unwanted sexual contact and you do not feel comfortable completing the online program, please know that an alternate option is available. You are not required to talk about your personal experience. The advocate will work with you to address ongoing safety and overall well-being issues, as well as discuss prevention measures we share widely with all students. Again, you will not be required to talk about your personal circumstance if you do not feel comfortable sharing.

For online program specific questions, please email ui-ipv-prevention@uiowa.edu and include your HawkID. RVAP is unable to assist with questions about the online program.

Step 1 - try a new browser. Often that is a quick fix when your current browser isn't cooperating. The program doesn't work well with handheld devices, it is best completed on a computer. More information on supported browsers can be found here: https://support.vectorsolutions.com/s/article/System-Requirements

Step 2 - review the strategies provided here: https://support.vectorsolutions.com/s/article/Basic-Troubleshooting-Problems

If you're still running into issues, after trying the steps listed in the link above, please reach out to us at ui-ipv-prevention@uiowa.edu and include screenshots of where you're running into trouble and we can further assist with troubleshooting.

It is not uncommon that a person may be enrolled in coursework at the university while also being a university employee, faculty, or staff member. This online program, “Sexual Violence for Graduate Students” addresses information required by federal guidelines for new students. New, in this case, means anyone enrolled in coursework for the first time since July 1, 2021. This course is a requirement regardless of any sexual violence prevention training you may have received specific to your role as an employee.

We are happy to help! Please contact us at ui-ipv-prevention@uiowa.edu and include your HawkID (the one with letters, not numbers). Every person's situation can be different so providing your HawkID allows us to get the information that is correct for you. You can expect a response in 2 business days, but we have multiple people who oversee the account, so you are likely to get a response sooner. If you're consulting other folks (ex: classmates, advisor, department administration) for answers you might not be getting the most current or accurate information. We're here and ready to answer any question you may have, so please come to us with any questions.
